Phantom Squares joins with many others in mourning the loss of John Sybalsky, a special friend and a vital part of our square dance community. John was recognized as one of the finest national callers, spending years working with local clubs, as well as helping refine and clarify calls and concepts for Callerlab. Phantoms had an opportunity learn from John in several 3A workshops. We found him to be a patient, knowledgeable and witty teacher. He improved our dancing and increased our confidence by showing us new ways to see calls.

One thing stood out about John. He truly enjoyed teaching, and it came across in every class he taught and dance he called. He often dropped in humorous bits, literary references and the occasional new vocabulary word, just to keep us entertained. John was as much fun after the dance as he was during it.

We extend our sympathy to Betsy whom we got to know well as she worked with John at his dances and workshops, often filling in when needed. John will be truly missed, both as an excellent caller and a constant friend.
